I have the same message "service trailer brake system" on my 2008 GMC Sierra with 60k miles. It came on out one day last week when there was no trailer hooked up. The trailer brakes work fine - I spent the weekend going over all the trailer wiring and testing the brakes with a separate 12 volt battery and a 2013 Suburban with factory ITBC.
