Insufficient is a vague and subjective term, and as we’ve shown in this Evidence Based Birth® Signature Article, there is a wide range of evidence showing that birthing people can safely eat and drink during labor. Neither ACOG nor ASA recommends restricting low-risk people to ice chips or sips of water during labor.

Evidence based birth. Method, part 1: Drink a 50-gram glucose solution (non-fasting), with blood sugar measured 1 hour later. If the blood sugar level result is ≥ 130 mg/dL, 135 mg/dL, or 140 mg/dL (set by the institution), then the screening test shows an increased risk for GDM.
